SATO solution enhances the secure labelling process in the laboratory

SATO, a global leader in barcode printing, labelling and EPC/RFID solutions for the healthcare industries, is enabling STARLIMS to help laboratories optimise data management.  Using Label Gallery 3 as a highly functional label design and print tool has enabled STARLIMS customers to more effectively use laboratory information management system data and output it in a more flexible way on to labels for samples, documents and storage media.

STARLIMS software is used by hundreds of laboratories in many countries around the world. They provide software solutions to laboratories, enabling them to enhance data management, accessibility, integrity and long-term value by providing powerful, efficient tools to support them in achieving goals.  The STARLIMS laboratory management system software suite is used by biomedical laboratories to gather and report on sample and sample analysis data, and the system is being for used in the UK regional molecular genetics laboratory network.

Regardless of the range, volume and complexity of the data laboratories produce, STARLIMS gives laboratory managers a complete picture of the processes and products in their laboratory. The company presents it in intuitive graphic formats, so users can quickly understand and respond to emerging trends and other essential information.

STARLIMS has held ISO 9000 accreditation since January 2001 and is a member of the American Society for Quality. The system is designed to help organisations meet their regulatory compliance needs and help ensure that samples and their associated tests are correctly managed by properly trained and qualified staff.

Laboratories are faced with ever increasing demands and need to manage larger volumes of data, while complying with stricter regulations and achieving higher quality and efficiency levels. STARLIMS works closely with its customers to understand their requirements and wanted to offer a tool which enhances the secure labelling required for sample handling within the laboratory processes.  It turned to SATO for advice.

SATO recommended its LabelGallery 3 software which has an easy-to-use interface and meets any label design and printing requirement for efficient label printing solutions.  Utilising a link with the sample data collected by the STARLIMS system, laboratory users have access to a variety of LabelGallery 3 linked solutions to enhance their labelling applications. These include printers, labels and bespoke software and data collection equipment.

SATO’s expertise in providing the complete solution in labels, printers, software and service support provides a single source solution for STARLIMS users.  The excellent flexibility of Label Gallery 3 has enabled some users to adopt the system and attach any existing printers in the laboratory to the STARLIMS System using Label Gallery 3 Dynamic Version.

“Since installing the SATO solution our customers are able to output laboratory data in a very flexible way on to labels for samples, documents and media storage,” says Julian Hughes, project leader at STARLIMS, “It has integrated seamlessly with our software and enables us to offer a reliable and easy-to-use solution to make laboratories smarter and enhance their data and information management.”

“We are delighted to be working with STARLIMS, demonstrating our expertise in linking to other systems to provide ease of labelling flexibility,” says Neil Batchelor, managing director at SATO UK.  “Label Gallery 3 has powerful database and connectivity tools to enable it to be used to empower the addition of sample and patient data to data carrier labels used throughout the laboratory process including Long Term Cryogenic storage.”

In addition, software system designers can save themselves considerable development expense by using SATO LabelGallery to add fully functional labelling including sophisticated auto ID features on data carriers from simple labels to RFID tags.
