Ready for Gen2 Tags, SATO’s Semi-Automatic FlagTag Applicator Assures Optimum Readability

Brussels, 12 July 2005 - SATO, the world’s leading manufacturer of label and barcode printers and a specialist in data collection systems (DCS) and radio frequency identification (RFID), has presented the first semi-automatic applicator for UHF-RFID tags. What makes this newly developed FlagTagSolution™ so unique is that, after printing, the narrow area of the paper label containing the actual UHF-RFID tag is folded along a perforation. In this way, the narrow RFID tag with the integrated antenna sticks out vertically from the surface of the pallet – as the word implies, just like a flag. This FlagTag provides 100% readability at all times, and hence guarantees reliable labelling of pallets using both RFID Gen1 and Gen2 tags. The semi-automatic SATO RFID FlagTag applicator does the time-consuming task of folding the FlagTags previously done by the warehouse staff. The result: UHF-RFID tags that are always perfectly folded and made for optimum readability across the entire supply chain. The SATO RFID print and apply unit produces a finished FlagTag that subsequently only needs to be applied by hand. Thanks to the open architecture of the SATO RFID printers, customers can switch effortlessly from Gen1 to Gen2 with a simple software update whenever they wish.

RFID specialists at SATO were the first, moreover, to develop a fully-automatic pallet-labelling device. SATO’s fully-automatic FlagTagSolutions™ are already being successfully deployed at the Nestlé distribution centre in Rangsdorf, Germany.

The great challenge facing SATO’s team of experts in terms of pallet tagging was the inadequate reading range of RFID tags when applied flat. Although modern UHF-RFID labels have a theoretical reading range of several meters, exhaustive live tests revealed that the contents of each individual pallet are all-important to the actual reading range: whether tin cans or jars, foil or aluminium packing, dry or fluid contents – all these substances affect the resonant frequency of the RFID tags in different ways! Even the new RFID Gen2 tags, which in principle offer better readability, do not get around this problem. In some cases, when UHF-RFID labels are applied flat, no signal whatsoever is received. To be able to apply UHF-RFID tags to pallets irrespective of their contents, however, SATO’s specialists came up with their FlagTagSolutions™, which are now available in a fully-automatic and a semi-automatic model.
