SATO Develops Food Industry’s First CO2 Cutting Packaging for Ajinomoto

ECONANO contributes to an annual 44 ton CO2 reduction

Tokyo, March 10th, 2017 – SATO, a leading global provider of Auto-ID solutions that empower workforces and streamline operations announced today that food additive and seasoning manufacturing global leader Ajinomoto will utilize the environmentally friendly ECONANO*1 stand-up pouches for its Nabe Cube®*2 (stock cubes for hot pot soup base) product lineup. The use of packaging materials to cut CO2 emissions is a first for the food industry.

ECONANO is a nanotechnology application that absorbs and reduces CO2 generated during incineration by turning it into solid ash. It will be used first with Ajinomoto’s Nabe Cube®, a product that has become highly popular line with seven flavors since its launch in 2012. By converting its current packaging to ECONANO, Ajinomoto will generate at least 25 percent less CO2 at the time of incineration, amounting to an approximate 44 ton annual reduction in CO2 emissions.

Ajinomoto has been striving to make resource savings in its product packaging and reduce energy consumption in logistics to lessen its environmental impact, and took notice of the CO2 reduction effects ECONANO has to offer as it explored new technologies.

With SATO’s ECONANO packaging, Nabe Cube® now joins the ranks of Ajinomoto’s “Aji-na Eco®” labeled products to carry a company-unique green logo as an indication of its eco-friendliness. The development of this CO2 reducing food packaging was also presented at the 54th All-Japan Packaging Technique Study Convention conducted in November 2016, and selected as an outstanding project.
