How ROCKWOOL Uses RFID in Manufacturing to Improve Logistics, Traceability and Inventory Accuracy

20/04/26How ROCKWOOL Uses RFID in Manufacturing to Improve Logistics, Traceability and Inventory Accuracy

RFID in manufacturing is transforming how global producers manage logistics, track inventory and meet rising customer demands for full supply chain traceability. SATO Europe, a global provider of auto-identification and labelling solutions, has worked with the ROCKWOOL Group for more than 20 years to digitise logistics operations across the insulation manufacturer's global factory network using RFID technology. The partnership, which began at ROCKWOOL's facility in Roermond, the Netherlands, has delivered measurable improvements in RFID logistics, inventory accuracy and operational efficiency.

Why ROCKWOOL needed a digital traceability solution

The ROCKWOOL Group is a Danish multinational and one of the world's leading manufacturers of stone wool insulation, with more than 10,000 employees worldwide. Its Roermond site in the Netherlands employs around 1,200 people, producing a diverse range of products including ceiling tiles, automotive components, roof panels and wall insulation.

With such variety in output, reliable product identification is essential. Until the partnership with SATO Europe began, Roermond's logistics processes were managed manually with pen and paper. As production volumes grew and customers increasingly expected full traceability, the site needed a digital auto-identification solution for manufacturing that could track every product from the factory floor to final delivery.

RFID technology from production line to dispatch

SATO Europe worked closely with the ROCKWOOL team to design and implement an RFID-based identification system using SATO RFID printers and RFID tags and labels. Each product receives an RFID label on the production line, and RFID scanners verify items automatically as they move through the facility. There is no need for manual barcode scanning at each stage.

The same approach extends to loading and dispatch. RFID readers fitted to forklifts confirm the correct pallet has been picked and check storage locations in real time, improving RFID logistics across the site. Outdoors, GPS is used to verify where products are stored before collection for onward transport. For customers who require barcode technology, the labels carry both barcodes and RFID data, maintaining compatibility across the supply chain.

Over a 15-year rollout, SATO printers have been deployed across ROCKWOOL's 25 factories worldwide, with the Roermond site serving as the foundation for the wider programme.

Results: improved inventory accuracy and fewer customer complaints

The operational benefits have been significant. Inventory reliability has improved considerably, and customer complaints have decreased. ROCKWOOL now has full track-and-trace visibility, meaning the team can confirm exactly when a product was manufactured and when it was delivered.

On the factory floor, operators spend less time on manual labelling and more time on production. SATO Europe collaborated with ROCKWOOL on the printer setup so that consumable changes, including carbon rolls and RFID label rolls, can be completed in a single motion, keeping changeover times to a minimum and reducing downtime.

These results reflect a wider pattern seen across SATO's customer base. In retail, for example, SATO's RFID solution helped a major retailer streamline inventory management and stock replenishment, demonstrating how the same core technology delivers value across very different supply chains.

A long-term RFID partnership in manufacturing

What defines this collaboration is its longevity and depth. SATO Europe's dedicated Account Manager for ROCKWOOL, Valentijn Gerritse, has been involved throughout the RFID integration, working alongside ROCKWOOL's project lead Ton Merx and logistics lead Ron Dings. That hands-on, consistent support reflects SATO Europe's Powered On Site approach, which means solving problems directly at the customer's location with localised, long-term expertise.

For manufacturers managing complex logistics across multiple sites, the ROCKWOOL story demonstrates the value of a trusted auto-identification partner. It is not just about deploying RFID technology. It is about building the kind of relationship where both sides understand each other's operations well enough to keep improving, year after year.

Frequently asked questions

What is RFID in manufacturing?

RFID in manufacturing refers to the use of radio-frequency identification tags and readers to automatically identify and track products, pallets and assets across the production and logistics process. It removes the need for manual barcode scanning and gives manufacturers real-time visibility of inventory.

How does RFID improve supply chain traceability?

RFID improves supply chain traceability by recording the movement of every tagged item automatically as it passes readers on the production line, forklifts, storage areas and dispatch points. Manufacturers can confirm when a product was made, where it has been stored and when it was delivered, without relying on manual checks.

What are the benefits of RFID logistics in a factory environment?

The main benefits of RFID logistics include improved inventory accuracy, fewer picking errors, reduced downtime, faster loading and dispatch, and fewer customer complaints. Operators also spend less time on manual labelling tasks and more time on core production activities.

Can RFID labels work alongside barcodes?

Yes. At ROCKWOOL, SATO Europe supplies labels that carry both barcodes and RFID data, so the system remains compatible with customers and partners who still use barcode scanning across the supply chain.
